Athena & Clyde

The USAT national board just passed this revision of the USAT Rule Book, Article III, General Rules and Conduct, Rule 3.2, regarding the Athena and Clyde class. The resolution passed on April 2.

“The weight standards will commence in effect on January 1, 2013.
Female weight class (Athena) 165 pounds
Male weight class (Clydesdale) 220 pounds.”

NOTE: This change is effective 2013.

No mas. Run Free!

Rest in peace, Caballo Blanco . Micah True, best known for his appearance in the running epic, Born to Run, was found dead in the Gila National Forest yesterday, after taking off on a twelve mile run with a t-shirt and a water bottle. You can read more of the story here. He had placed this quote on his Facebook page earlier this year:

“If I were to be remembered for anything at all, I would want that to be that I am/was authentic. No Mas. Run Free!”

I wrote a post awhile back called “Stop Faking It,” which really asked the question:  How hard is it to be truly authentic? Why don’t people share their struggles more often? What is everyone so afraid of?

I still wonder about this. In triathlon so many people are new – new to the sport – struggling and wondering what to do next. The elite few are…well, the elite few.  Triathlon is made of these beginners, as much as it is made up of age group competitors.  I have been met with amazing open arms during my journey to 70.3,  and now, beyond.  I still very much consider myself a beginner triathlete, because I don’t think I’ll feel legit until I can run at a reasonable pace.

I hope that as this sport continues to grow, especially with Lance Armstrong’s return to the sport, that we will all remember where we came from, and where we are going… and if, in the story of our journey we can help someone start… that is a true blessing. By these small gestures… I believe we can all run a little more free.

Run

….”Embrace, and if you can stomach it, share your fears and struggles… because chances are, someone else is feeling the same way. Faking it...well, that’s just for baby showers and cocktail parties…”

Just keep moving forward,
Meredith

Triathlon Smells…

…like heaven.

Okay, so maybe I’m weird.  But I love smelling like the pool after a swim.  Today, I had a tough, tough swim, which ended with three short time trials.  Then I had a breakfast meeting for work. Each time I’d take a sip of my coffee, I could smell the pool.  Admittedly, maybe I don’t have the right soap.

But then again, maybe I don’t want the right soap.

I like smelling like the pool for the entire work day.  This small sensory reminder confirms the hard work I put in… before the other (sane) people were even awake.

The smell lifts my spirits…. long after I start to forget the great effort I paid to the triathlon gods.  I just plain like it.

I like arriving at the gym before dark, getting wiffs of the towels being laundered…just the smell of the place. The fancy gym has the fancy towels, but even at the YMCA, I like the wafts from the soap, the chlorine, the basketball courts.  It all makes me so happy.

Triathlon smells simply delicious. My bike, Antonia, smells awesome.  I like the smell of my Shimanos, even though they are getting a little musty. I love the Silver Comet Trail on early summer mornings, the scent of chocolate protein powder and Bodyglide and Sports Beans (hello, endurance candy!).

I like stinky hair and feet and socks, because it means I did the workout correctly.

Maybe I like all this craziness because I am still new to the sport.  Maybe because I missed, for so long, the gym/workout/competition scents. I used to be an Olympic-style weightlifter back in the “day,” along with my husband (who I lovingly call: “The Expert).  Back then, the Expert says he loved the smell of chalk.  For me, the chalk smell gave me the creeps, but I did like the metallic aroma of the weights, the bar.

I’m not sure what the sensory glory is all about… but I know I love this triathlon-scented goodness, irrespective of its potential weirdness.

Just keep moving forward,
Meredith

Swim Bike Mom for Georgia MultiSports!

Hi Everyone,

This is Meredith, better known in the blog world as “Swim Bike Mom,” and I will, from time to time, be bringing you some blog action especially for Georgia MultiSports about triathlon, upcoming events in our great state, and probably some general triathlon-related laughs for you.

Short bio: I am a wife, mother, full-time attorney and half an Ironman (Miami 70.3, 2011). I fell in love with triathlon in 2010, and I will never (ever) be the same again.  If you don’t like reading, I have a video montage of my baby triathlon life here.

Now, I am no expert about triathlon, and I still have alot to learn and pounds (several thousand) to lose.  But what I do know is that the spirit of triathlon is universal:  people putting themselves “out there” and working towards a common goal (the finish line – some faster, some slower).  But at the end of the day, it’s about working hard, acheiving results and feeling a sense of amazing accomplishment.  Who doesn’t want to feel that?

Swim Bike Mom

I participated in the 2011 PT Solutions Acworth Women’s Sprint Triathlon put on by Georgia MultiSports… and I can tell you, it’s an amazing event.  Currently, I am sidelined with a broken foot…but I have the 2012 race on my schedule.  If you are a woman, just starting out in triathlon, I encourage you to put this August 2012 race on your calendar and shoot for it.  It is a FABULOUS first time event, women-only and a fantastic course.  You can read my race report from 2011 here.

Best of luck for a great 2012 race season!

Just Keep Moving Forward.
